Which sizes you actually need

This is where most people over-work. You do not need to produce every size. Apple takes the largest set you upload for each device family and scales it down for smaller screens automatically.

For the majority of apps that means:

Upload size-specific sets only when a scaled-down screenshot genuinely looks wrong — usually because your caption text becomes too small to read on the smaller device.

The one rule that trips people up: if your app supports iPad, App Store Connect will not let you ship without at least one iPad screenshot. iPhone screenshots do not satisfy the iPad requirement.

Format and file requirements

PNG is the safer choice for store screenshots. They are mostly flat UI and text, which JPEG compression softens — and soft text is exactly what makes a listing look amateur at thumbnail size.

Why the first two matter most

On both the search results page and the product page, people see roughly the first two or three screenshots without scrolling. Most never scroll. Put your strongest single benefit in screenshot one and treat the rest as supporting detail.

Generate all of these sizes at once

MockupLite takes your raw screenshots and exports a correctly sized, store-ready set in one ZIP — device frames, backgrounds, and captions included. No Photoshop, no manual resizing.

Common questions

What size are App Store screenshots?

The primary iPhone size is 6.9-inch at 1320 × 2868 pixels in portrait. Apple also accepts 1290 × 2796. For iPad, the 13-inch size is 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732.

How many screenshots can I upload?

Up to 10 per device size, with at least one required per device family your app supports.

Do screenshots need to be PNG or JPEG?

Both are accepted. Images must be RGB with no alpha transparency. PNG keeps text sharper.

Can I use marketing text and device frames in screenshots?

Yes. Captions and device frames are standard practice and are what most top-ranking listings use. The rule is that screenshots must still accurately represent the app — you cannot show functionality that does not exist.

Do screenshot sizes change?

Yes, whenever Apple ships a new display size. That is why this page carries a verification date. Before a launch, it is always worth confirming against Apple's official screenshot specifications.
